Low side pressure values R134a vs R1234yf Ambient TemperatureĬonnect the pressure gauge to the low pressure (L) port in Cobalt. Check your vehicle’s owners manual or look under the hood to find the type of the refrigerant your vehicle uses. The pressure values based on ambient temperatures differ depending on the type of the refrigerant. Most modern vehicles use R-134a refrigerant, but newer vehicles are increasingly using R-1234yf as a more environmentally friendly replacement. So, even if you recharged your Cobalt AC at the recommended pressure, the system could still over pressurize when the ambient temperatures get warmer. The refrigerant pressure is affected by the outside atmospheric temperature. Note: See next section for recommended pressure values.Īmbient temperature affect on refrigerant pressure Shake the canister briefly and release the refrigerant into the system until the recommended pressure has been achieved. The recharge kit will only properly connect to the low pressure port, and will not fit the high pressure port. Note: If the ports are not labelled, try connecting the recharge kit to both unlabeled ports on the AC hoses. Remove the cap from the low pressure service port labelled L, and connect the AC recharge kit.Turn on the AC and set it to the coldest setting, and the fan speed to maximum. This information is typically located under the hood and/or in the owners manual. Check which type of refrigerant your vehicle uses. You can recharge your AC through the low-pressure port with a do it yourself AC recharge kit. One is labelled H for high-pressure and the other one is labelled L for low-pressure. There are two ports in the air conditioning system of Cobalt. How to recharge AC refrigerant the easy way If your vehicle has been in an accident, you should inspect the condenser and its hoses for leaks. Since the condenser sits at the front of the vehicle, it can get damaged even in minor accidents like running over a tree branch in a storm. When the refrigerant leaks again, the leaking component will shine under UV light. The leak can be diagnosed by injecting small amount of fluorescent dye into the AC system. Refrigerant leak in Cobalt can be caused by leaking O-ring seals, leaking condenser or evaporator core, or a cracked hose. If the refrigerant level goes down again quickly, it means there is probably a leak. Just have it refilled and you can drive with pleasant temperatures again. If you don’t service the AC system in your Cobalt for a long time, the refrigerant level will eventually get so low that the system loses its cooling capacity. Ideally, the refrigerant should never leak in a properly sealed AC system, but most car AC systems do leak small amount of refrigerant over time due to minor imperfections and will need recharging after every few years. All of these fluids are harmful to your eyes and skin so it is important to protect yourself.A low refrigerant level in your Cobalt does not necessarily mean there is a leak. You never know what could be dripping down from the engine, battery acid, engine coolant, brake fluid, etc. We recommend wearing safety glasses whenever you are working under your Cobalt. If your Cobalt is too low to the ground to access your drain plug and oil filter, be sure to use jack stands and safe jacking procedures before getting under your Cobalt. If you can't do this, see our parts page to find a Chevrolet Cobalt oil filter wrench. For most Chevrolets, you can wrap an old belt around the oil filter and unscrew it by hand. This video shows the location of the oil drain plug, oil filter, oil fill cap and dipstick in addition to the steps needed to change the oil and filter in your Cobalt. The owners manual will indicate if your 2008 Cobalt takes 0W-20, 0W-30, 5W-20, 5W-30 or 10W-30. Conventional oil works well for drivers who change their oil regularly and if it is approved for your Cobalt. Synthetic oil will not break down over time and tends to have longer change intervals, so if you want to have more time between oil changes, then synthetic oil is a good choice. The synthetic oil vs conventional oil debate has many proponents on both sides. Many vehicles will require the use of 100% synthetic oil, others allow synthetic blend, which is a mix of synthetic and conventional oil, and conventional oil too. What type of oil is required in a Cobalt? You can use synthetic oil in any modern vehicle. Learn how to change the oil and oil filter in your 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt with this free video.
